Songs of the Week - 19/05/2025

These are the 15 tracks you need to check out this week!

CMAT - 'Take A Sexy Picture Of Me'

This week's Songs of the Week feature kicks off with one of the catchiest and most empowering songs to be featured so far, CMAT's 'Take A Sexy Picture Of Me'. The song is the second release from CMAT's upcoming album 'EURO-COUNTRY' which is set for release on August 29th, naming the album after a genre she continues to trailblaze. The new single showcases CMAT's tongue-in-cheek storytelling that is as empowering as it is entertaining, fighting back against those who feel they have a right to comment on women's bodies.

Alessi Rose - 'Same Mouth'

Alessi Rose makes another return to my Songs of the Week, this time with the first single from her brand-new era. 'Same Mouth' is the lead single from Alessi's upcoming EP 'Voyeur'. This new era sees Alessi step into making even more unapolagetically authentic music, and this new song is all the better for it. 'Same Mouth' explores the confusion and emotional whiplash that comes when someone's words are misaligned with their actions. It is written with razor-sharp lyricism that solidifies Alessi Rose's place at the very top of the UK pop scene.

Megan Wyn - 'Hold Me'

Next up we have Megan Wyn's first release for nearly a year, 'Hold Me', a heartfelt indie-fuelled single that captures the confusion and melancholia that comes with heartbreak, but still opting to choose love going forward. The lyrical vulnerability makes the song even easier to relate to, with the poignant lyricism being delivered by some of Wyn's most soaring vocals to date. There is a reason why her stock continues to rapidly rise on the indie scene.

MINOE - 'teenage disillusionment'

'teenage disillusionment', the emotional new song from Canadian artist MINOE features some of the most raw and honest songwriting I have heard for some time. The alt-pop style track sees MINOE reflect on the complexities that come with growing up with abusive parents, a topic that MINOE navigates in a courageously vulnerable way.

Mackenzie - 'State I'm In'

Mackenzie steps into her "drama queen era" with the blistering new track 'State I'm In'. This energetic new single exists in a soundscape between pop, rock and pop-punk, creating the perfect platform for Mackenzie to build an emotion-fuelled vocal track. It doesn’t take long to realise that “State I’m In” is a deeply personal track for Mackenzie, rooted in the fear of falling short, yet driven by an unwavering refusal to give up. However, the song is written in such a way that listeners will be able to relate their own journeys to it.

Maddie Regent - 'Any day now'

Last week saw indie-pop artist Maddie Regent release her highly anticipated debut album 'On the phone with my mom', a 14-track journey through some truly introspective yet radiant songwriting. Picking one song from the album to highlight is a difficult task given the high quality they all possess, but the internal battle and hopeful message displayed on 'Any day now' make it a must-listen.

EERA - 'Forget Her'

Another powerful new release to come out last week was EERA's brand-new track 'Forget Her', which will also feature on her upcoming album 'I'll Stop When I'm Done', set for release on September 26th. The new single gives listeners an exciting insight into what to expect on the full LP, a genre-blending exploration of musicality where every note and lyric is profound in meaning. 'Forget Her' is a personal window into EERA's desire to forget about a past version of herself, something that will be relatable to many.

Matt Bawtree - 'Selfish Man'

After releasing his incredible debut single 'Starting Line' back in March, Matt Bawtree has returned with follow-up release 'Selfish Man'. The new track maintains all the indie brilliance that the debut single brought, pairing it with an impressively profound lyricism that sets the stage for Bawtree to launch a really exciting career. His songwriting possesses an authentic vulnerability that contrasts perfectly with the song's upbeat sound, creating a really enjoyable listening experience.

DR DR - 'Vultures'

DR DR continue their takeover of the UK's rock scene with their gritty new single 'Vultures'. The track, which calls upon some of the finest riffs you will have heard in some time, is one of DR DR's most emotionally raw to date. The song calls upon a time in lead singer Fred Farrell's life where he realised, despite being surrounded by many people, many were not true friends. Instead, they swarmed him like 'vultures'. Writing about such a dark and difficult time is always admirable, providing a very fitting end to mental health awareness week.

Sam Foster Smith - 'In Colour'

2025 has already been a huge year for Sam Foster Smith, pairing momentous live shows with the release of two brilliant new singles, 'I Choose You' and 'The Good Life'. However, with his third release of the year, 'In Colour', Sam has taken his musical excellence to a whole new level. The reflective single is arguably Sam's most emotional to date, perfectly capturing the feeling of thinking back on past memories, whilst highlighting the profound depths he possesses as a songwriter.

Llinos Emanuel - 'Bossa Nova Interlude'

After years of lending her vocals to many of music's biggest names, Llinos Emanuel launched her solo career last summer, and has not looked back since. With every release she has got better and better, with her new track 'Bossa Nove Interlude' more than continuing this trend. The track, which surprisingly takes inspiration from bossa nova music, showcases the spellbinding vocals Llinos possesses in the most mesmerising way.

Jess Young - 'Heartbreak Vacation'

Irish pop-artist Jess Young is another artist who dropped her first release of 2025 last week, releasing the infectious 'Heartbreak Vacation'. The track perfectly captures the messy mix of freedom, sadness, and self-rediscovery that follows escaping from a toxic relationship, moving to an island far away to indulge in a 'Heartbreak Vacation'. With shimmering synths and a slick bassline driving through the heart of this song, this is yet another incredible release to enjoy in this warmer weather.

Nathan O'Regan - 'Better Days'

After releasing his stellar single 'Killer' back in March, Nathan O'Regan has returned with 'Better Days', the second single to be taken from his upcoming debut album 'Olive Branch'. This tender ballad takes a softer approach than the album's first release, highlighting O'Regan's emotional side as a songwriter, creating a song that is radiant in the hope it spreads.

ORKAH - 'Head Down'

'Head Down' is the new genre-blending single from Midlands four-piece ORKAH. The song calls upon influences spanning from indie-folk to a more electronic soundscape, creating an immersive listening experience. The track, which the band originally wrote back when they were teenagers, is filled with hopeful lyricism, and the music world is a much better place now it has finally been released.a

Sam Lambeth - 'When You Take That Train'

This week’s feature wraps up with an incredible new single from the ever-impressive Sam Lambeth. Blending americana influences with a polished power-pop sound, the track oozes a warm sense of nostalgia from the first listen. Teaming up with long-time collaborator Ryan Pinson, Lambeth has crafted a rich, melodic soundscape that perfectly complements his signature catchy vocals. The result is a vibrant, melody-driven gem.
