Mae Stephens - 'Woah Man!'

One of the biggest breakout pop stars of the last few years, Mae Stephens, has just released her first song of 2025, 'Woah Man!'. The song drives a theme of female empowerment in the catchiest way possible, blending Mae's highly regarded funk-pop sound with some of her most intricate lyricism to date. If this is a sign of things to come from Mae Stephens in 2025, then this could be a really special year!

Ellie Dixon - 'Knight Shift'

The new mediaeval-inspired era of Ellie Dixon just keeps getting better and better, as she makes yet another appearance in my Songs of the Week with new single 'Knight Shift'. The funky groove that runs through the backing of the song is immediately gripping, providing the perfect backing for Ellie to build her period-blending lyricism above. There are knight double entendres in abundance, and as always, some stellar harmonies showcasing Dixon's vocal prowess.

Bellah Mae - 'Bad Day To Be My Ex'

The powerful new single 'Bad Day To Be My Ex' is another first release of 2025, as Bellah Mae steps into the year in the most empowering, self-confident way. The song is catchy and relatable on the surface, but digging deeper carries some really important themes about women controlling their own narratives, highlighted by references to the likes of Pamela Anderson. On top of the poignant meaning, this song is also just a sonically excellent pop song, combining an almost RnB backing with yet another killer vocal track from Bellah.

Lydia May - 'star girl'

Pop's next big thing Lydia May continues her hot streak of releasing 'Songs Of The Week', with 'star girl' giving Lydia her fourth consecutive appearance. The new theatrical release sees Lydia take a more upbeat approach, drawing upon similarities between the stage and life, telling listeners that they are a star no matter what anyone else says. Although these phrases often become cliché, with Lydia May they ring true...everything she touches turns to gold, and the sky really is the limit.

ISOLABELLA - 'BACKSEAT LOVER'

ISOLABELLA's spellbinding new single 'BACKSEAT LOVER' is the perfect soundtrack for a hopeless romantic, perfectly capturing that feeling of deep infatuation and long-term planning that can follow a successful first meeting. The summery indie-style instrumental perfectly complements what could be ISOLABELLA's best vocal performance to date. This is a track that is as fun as it is melodic, and will no doubt be stuck in your mind from the first listen.

The Darklings - 'ICK'

Dark pop-duo The Darklings have finally released the long-awaited follow-up single to their 2024 debut release, 'Eat His Heart'. Their new track 'ICK' is relentless in pace, calling upon an energetic electro sound to drag listeners into The Darklings' twistedly brilliant world. Zuzu and Callie Crighton's voices seem made to bounce off one another, fitting perfectly into the song's soundscape.

St. Catherine's Child - 'Negative Space'

St. Catherine's Child is by far one of the most talented artists to exist in the Folk/Americana space, gaining adoration from both sides of the pond, and her new release 'Negative Space' shows exactly why. The song has been written in the most exceptional way, perfectly capturing the feeling of isolation you can experience within a crowded room, all whilst showcasing St. Catherine's Child's stellar vocals. Its release has also been paired with the most brilliant music video, which I cannot recommend enough that you check out!

Bonnie Medicine - 'Heartbroken'

'Heartbroken' is one of many new songs that have graced the world as part of Bonnie Medicine's exceptional new EP 'Belonging'. The 5-track EP is the perfect introduction to Bonnie's music, showcasing the full extent of her masterful songwriting abilities. I picked 'Heartbroken' specifically to be featured in my Songs of the Week, as few songs manage to explore and represent the emotions that come with grief quite so beautifully.

Serena Sun - 'Enjoy!'

Another new EP which dropped this past week was 'For a Moment or Two', the sophomore EP from sensational singer-songwriter Serena Sun. The EP combines Serena's three previously released singles with two new tracks, 'Running with the Bulls' and 'Enjoy!'. Both new tracks are truly brilliant, but after hearing the indie-pop excellence that is on display throughout 'Enjoy!', I couldn't not include it.

Twin Skeletons - 'You & Me'

Fierce four-piece Twin Skeletons released their heaviest track to date last week, 'You & Me'. The song combines everything brilliant about Twin Skeletons in the most captivating way. Phoebe Millard's vocals are at their most powerful to date, James Millard's guitar riffs are sounding massive, Fred Tilbury's basslines are thunderous, and it is all backed up by the heavy-hitting drums of Joe Gorfin. This is rock music at its very best.

Iona Summer - 'Jack Daniel's'

Iona Summer is back with her infectious third single 'Jack Daniel's', a track that is driven by buoyant rock backing but features some truly personal poignant lyricism. Iona is getting better with every release, quickly shaping her own sound and identifying exactly the type of artist she wants to be, and it is one that wouldn't look out of place at the very top.

PAVÉ - 'Whatever The Cost'

Manchester alt-rockers PAVÉ have returned with their first single since last year's highly regarded debut EP 'ARE WE ABOVE THE SECRETS WE KEEP?'. This EP was undoubtedly one of the most exciting of 2024, but with new single 'Whatever the Cost', PAVÉ have managed to reach new heights. The song bursts open with the most gripping genre-blending instrumental, calling upon pop, shoegaze, electro and metal influences to create the most incredible soundscape. This intro is quickly followed by the breathtaking vocals of Alanya-Jade, and from that moment on, the scene is set for sheer rock perfection.

LOGAN - 'Stranger'

Another new EP appears in this week's Songs of the Week, this time from retro-pop artist LOGAN who has just released the masterpiece that is 'Quarter Century Modern'. The five-track project features a brilliant blend of songs inspired by 20th-century soul and 21st-century pop, with my personal pick being 'Stranger'. This particular track feels so fresh and yet so nostalgic that I would believe it came out in 1980 just as much as I would it believe it came out last week. LOGAN is a vocal powerhouse and is undoubtedly going to be a real one to watch in 2025.

Christabel - 'Last One Standing'

'Last One Standing' is the emotional new track from Christabel, being based on a personal journey she went through with a beloved friend. Despite the song's personal nature, I couldn't help but listen and relate the lyrics to my own journey in life, as well as those around me, which is a testament to the songwriting prowess Christabel possesses. The new single is also the first to be officially taken from Christabel's highly anticipated upcoming debut album INTUITION, which if 'Last One Standing' is anything to go by, could be one of the releases of the year.

Mollie Elizabeth - 'Dinner For One'

'Dinner For One' is the dramatic sophomore single from Mollie Elizabeth, following the release of January's 'Vegas Venetian'. The new release wouldn't feel out of place in the most sophisticated of theatre pieces or Hollywood classics. Mollie Elizabeth seems to know exactly the type of performer she wants to be, and is already carving her way into the industry as one of the most exciting performers around.

Local Rainbow & Popeth - 'Celwydd'

Long-term favourite Local Rainbow has just released one of her most exciting tracks to date, 'Celwydd', which is also her first full Welsh-language release. The song, which tells the story of Cinderella going to a rave, is a collaboration with the brilliant Popeth, creating a vibrant track that would soundtrack such a rave perfectly. An English version of the song has also been released under the title 'Rumours (Remix), but hearing Local Rainbow perform so sensationally in her native language meant 'Celwydd' had to be the version for me to include!

Dee Rae - 'Purple and Red'

'Purple and Red' is not only the new single from 'Dee Rae', but is also the lead track from their upcoming cinematic debut EP. The new song sees Dee flawlessly transition from a softer-folk opening into a cacophony of indie-inspired guitar brilliance, showcasing the widespread musical ability they possess. It is this musicality that also saw Dee announced as part of Come Play With Me Records' 'Next Up North' 2025 cohort.

Aaron Dinning - 'Look Who's Holding The Gun Now!'

Another upcoming EP lead single, this time the title track from Aaron Dinning's upcoming 2nd EP, 'Look Who's Holding The Gun Now!'. The new song is a lyrical exploration into how poor self-esteem can lead to the delusion that a friend may be falling in love with you, only to realise that isn't the case. The track is penned sensationally well, being delivered by Dinning's incredible vocal work and a guitar-heavy indie-pop sound. If the rest of the EP is as good as its lead single, then Aaron Dinning could well become one of the main names on the UK indie scene.

Chris Hart - 'Rain'

'Rain' is the wonderful new release from Chris Hart, a coming of age track about moving to a new place and the new life experiences that comes with it. It is a charming track that isn't afraid to embrace a little cheese to create a piece that you cannot help but feel better after listening to. This is the third single to be released from Chris Hart's upcoming album, and there will be a further single every month leading into the album's release in June, so most definitely follow the link below to keep updated with the next releases!
