Last night saw The Courtyard Theatre transform into the home attic of Attic Girl, ready for her first ever headline show. The intrigue around Attic Girl has been building since her ‘Spooky Special Guest’ spot on Luvcat’s recent tour and the release of her debut single ‘Nothing Is Quite As It Seems’, but last night felt like the moment her world truly stepped out of the shadows and into something far more expansive. The outside world slipped away before we had even stepped inside. The venue’s foyer had been transformed with cobwebs, dried flower petals and flickering candlelight, with a lone violinist weaving through the space, setting the tone before eventually reappearing later in the attic itself. From the very start, it was clear this was not going to be a standard gig.
That atmosphere deepened as we entered the main room. Drapes hung from the ceiling, guiding the eye towards a stage that had been fully reimagined as an attic. Clocks lined the stage wall. Candles burned low. Cobwebs clung to stacks of books and antique chests of drawers. Lamps cast a hazy glow across the smoke-filled room. It felt as though we had stumbled into a hidden world that had been waiting quietly for us to find it.
When the house lights dimmed and the candlelit attic fell into darkness, a voiceover prologue began, pulling us fully into the story of Attic Girl. The opening number, and currently her only released song, ‘Nothing Is Quite As It Seems’, followed. It did not begin on stage. Instead, Attic Girl appeared at the back of the room, singing as she moved through the crowd towards the attic set. It was an instantly striking entrance that immediately set the. tone for the rest of the evening.
This was not a performance confined to the stage. Attic Girl repeatedly stepped into the audience, locking eyes with people, delivering lines inches from faces, at times almost shouting yet never losing control of the melody. The intensity of those moments felt raw rather than rehearsed, as though we were watching thoughts spill out in real time. Each song bled into the next through atmospheric soundscapes and narrative voiceovers, slowly revealing the intertwined story of Attic Girl and Basement Boy, and charting her journey towards understanding who she is.
As the night unfolded, that journey took on a darker edge. The descent of Attic Girl became tangible. Stage props stopped being just decoration, instead becoming part of the storytelling. Objects were torn from the set, thrown aside, handed out to audience members like fragments of a memory being shared. All the drama built towards a closing number that saw Attic Girl confronting the truth of her past life. There was a sense of clarity breaking through the chaos. Umbrella in hand, she made her way out through the attic door, leaving us behind in the dim light of what had once felt like her sanctuary.
When artists lean heavily into theatrics, the music can sometimes suffer. Here, that was never the case. The songs were exceptional. Each one drew the room further in, every line delivered with a conviction that made the story feel lived rather than performed. ‘Con Man’ in particular had the room gripped from the first note. During its climax, Attic Girl unravelled in front of us, pushing almost guttural vocals into the crowd, singing directly into phones and faces, blurring the line between performer and audience completely. It was one of the most captivating moments of performance I have ever witnessed.
Trying to describe a show like this is difficult because it was far more than a concert. It felt like art in its purest form. A shared experience that you couldn't help but keep your eyes locked on. There remains a mystique around Attic Girl and where this narrative is heading, and that sense of intrigue only adds to the pull. One thing is certain though, this is the most exciting. As the song suggests, Nothing was quite as it seemed, and the brilliance of Attic Girl will only grow because of that.
