We kick this week's Songs of the Week off with the first solo release of 2025 for Anthony Lexa, 'Ugliest Girl in the World', following her epic collaboration with Bugwell and Nathan X, 'Midnight'. 'Ugliest Girl in the World' is Anthony's grittiest song to date, and by far one of her most emotionally raw. Songs do not come much more empowering than this, promoting a real sense of self-confidence and self-worth without having to call upon negative stereotypes of beauty.
Another first release of 2025, as Ellie Pettinati makes her first stamp on the year with what genuinely could be her best track to date, 'Fake Apology'. At just 16, Ellie is writing music well beyond her years, and the new track is her most mature and impactful to date. Brilliantly relatable lyricism is paired exceptionally well with an almost Soul/RnB-style backing that complements Ella's vocals incredibly.
Last month saw sensational singer-songwriter Bryony Lloyd release her spellbinding debut EP 'Aerial'. The EP is a six-track masterpiece, blending folk-inspired instrumentals with some of the most ethereal vocal performances I have heard in some time. The EP features four pre-released songs, and two brand-new tracks, including my SOTW pick 'When You Looked Away'. The stripped-back stylings of this song mean the expert musicality on display remains at the forefront, immercing listeners in the most magical listening experience.
'Air' is the incredible new energetic collaboration between chess and Rendra. The duo combine to create a guitar-driven track that is as punchy as it is catchy. The track blends indie-rock and alt-rock stylings that instantly capture your attention, dynamically shifting from heavy riffs to delicate atmospheric backings. The song is then capped off by brilliant, often harmonious, vocalwork sending the track to whole new levels of greatness.
After appearing in my Songs of the Week last September with 'Weavers Field', Heff VanSaint is back with arguably an even greater track, 'Other Side of The Hill'. This new release is an atmospheric indie song that feels as nostalgic as it does reflective, looking back on years gone by in a way that longs for a time which may not have been as positive as you remember. Heff's vocalwork captures the tone of the song perfectly, delivering this brilliant lyrical work in the way such poetry should be delivered.
Long-term favourite Taylor D finds herself back in my Songs of the Week with what may be her most pure-rock song to date, 'Born To Love You'. The track sees Taylor powerfully deliver her vocal track over a heavier-than-normal backing, in a style that really suits her. This is a track that will no doubt resonate with listeners, and provides the perfect introduction point for new fans.
The penultimate track in this week's feature comes from indie-folk artist Liam Higgins, and his incredible new release 'Through The Wild'. The song has a coming of age feel about it, with its emotional impact being enhanced by the stunning strings section running through the song's backing. Liam recorded this song nestled in the mountains of Austria, and you really can feel the freeing spirit of nature in the way the track is composed.
We finish this week's round-up with the brilliant genre-blending fourth single from experimental pop artist BLOODL3TTER, 'No one's home'. This track takes a slightly darker tone than BLOODL3TTER's previously released music, a tonal shift that makes their music feel even more emotional and authentic. For fans of electro music and alt-pop, this is a must listen.
