We start this week's Songs of the Week with cover star FLEUR ROUGE, who last week released her sophomore EP 'Wish You The Worst'. The new EP was paired with the release of it's final single 'Rabbit Hole', a psychadelic alt-pop song that manages to perfectly encapsulate the overwhelming journey of heading down a rabbit hole whilst dealing with anxiety and panic attacks. The whole EP is a true masterpiece, but this new track in particular may just be the best on it, blending exploratory soundscapes with poignant lyricism.
I have lost count of how many times Beth McCarthy has appeared in my Songs of the Week now. Everything the pop-rock artist touches seems to turn to gold, and that is epitomised by the new EP 'Hot and Stupid'. The five-track release is an exploration into some of Beth's most upbeat and adventurous music to date. Every track on the EP really is incredible which makes picking just one track to feature a difficult task, however the anthemic track 'You Up?' may just take my pick for favourite on the record.
After a string of breathtakingly brilliant releases last year, Lonnie Gunn has returned with riotous new single 'EX GF'. The song seamlessly blends a heavy guitar-driven track with Lonnie's soft vocals, creating the most sensational contrast that Lonnie labels 'bubblegrunge'. Lonnie Gunn is an artist that seems to have everything it takes to reach the very top, and with this release she takes a huge step closer to getting there.
One of the week's best new indie releases comes from grunge-infused band Chest, who have just put out their nostalgia-drenched atmospheric new single 'GOSPEL'. The track sees Chest embark on an introspective dive into the concept of self-egos and compulsion, creating a lyrically excellent track that equally highlights their high proficiency as instrumentalists. This looks set to be a huge year for Chest, and 'GOSPEL' could not have provided a more perfect way to start it.
Self-proclaimed 'Countrygaze pop' artist Leah Wilcox released her stunning new single 'feet fall forwards.' last week. The track explores the concept that life will always move forwards no matter what, delving into the difficulties of letting go of control to allow this to happen. Leah gives what could well be her most ethereal vocal performance to date on the track, blending this with an elegant arrangement that solidifies this as arguably the best Leah Wilcox song to date.
Creating a debut single is often a daunting task to tackle, but with 'Don't Look Back' Matilda has stamped her feet into the music scene in a huge way. The track is a well-balanced masterpiece that combines a delicate string section with masterful guitarwork and an atmospheric soundscape to create an immediately gripping backing track. However, the true stand out of this song is the captivating lyricism and mesmerising vocal performance that Matilda gives. 'Don't Look Back' may just be the world's introduction to music's next great talent.
This week's Songs of the Week campaign is rounded off with another debut release, this time from newcomer Bettina and her energetic track 'Want Me Bad'. This infectious release sees Bettina blend elements of R&B, pop and hip-hop to create an instantly engaging track that is as playful as it is musically great. This is a catchy introduction to Bettina, who is penning lyrics that will be both empowering and relatable to so many listeners.
