These are the 12 tracks you need to check out this week!
This week's Songs of the Week are kicked off by 2024's SBTM Breakthrough Artist of the Year, Holly Nicholson, and her brand-new song 'heartbreak era'. The track is an energetic indie-pop anthem that will act as the perfect listen for those waiting to discover Holly's music. The song is also the title track of Holly's debut EP, which was also released last week, featuring her four sensational previous releases, alongside 'heartbreak era' and emotional track 'London'.
'LOVE YOU BETTER' is the new single from Northern pop-artist Lois, who made her return to music last month with former Song of the Week 'MINE'. This new release builds on the brilliant foundation set by 'MINE', showcasing the depths of musicality Lois possesses. 'LOVE YOU BETTER' is a stellar blend of emotional storytelling and catchy rhythm, perfectly summing up Lois as an artist.
Collaborations don't come much bigger than this, as pop sensation Bradley Simpson teams up with his upcoming tour support act Nieve Ella on the brilliantly infectious track 'Favourite Band'. The pop track is laced with indie influences, which makes it a perfect listen now the days are getting warmer. The harmonious duet stylings of Simpson and Ella only act to make this song an even more joyous experience.
Grave Calver has stepped into 2025 in the catchiest way possible, releasing her delightfully captivating new single 'So Last Season'. The new song builds on Grace's tongue-in-cheek style of songwriting, being delivered in the most authentically self-assured way. With every release, Grace seems to further define her unique sound and styling, and it feels it is only a matter of time until it becomes adored by the masses.
Labyrinthine Oceans have spent the last two years putting out some of the most uniquely excellent grunge-gaze music, creating the most mind-blowing soundscapes that are as instrumentally dense as they are vocally ethereal. However, this spellbinding blend of guitar-driven chaos and hauntingly beautiful vocals has perhaps never been more apparent than it is on new single 'heaven'. 'heaven' is also taken off of the band's new EP 'everyone was alive', providing even more music to use to discover the greatness of Labyrinthine Oceans.
Cambridge-based alt-indie band In Cairo dropped their third single ‘Beyond Our Lives’ last week, a punchy indie track that utilities dynamic instrumentals and passionate vocals to deliver a blistering masterpiece. The song has an almost coming of age feel around it sonically, but lyrically dives much deeper, perfectly summing up the feeling of longing for someone after the flame has burnt out. With a riotous reputation for their live performances and an increasingly excellent discography, nothing is stopping In Cairo heading to the big time.
Genre-blending duo hiccup have released their second single of the year, 'EVERYTHING SUCKS', blurring the lines between hyperpop and punk-rock. It is a call to wanting more in life, never being satisfied with what you have, being delivered in the most angst-driven way. It is impossible to sit still listening to this song, so listeners will need to prepare themselves to be overwhelmed by a wave of fierce energy.
Another first release of the year is up next, this time coming from neo-soul duo Achilles Heel and their brand-new collaboration with Lucia, 'Beautiful & Naive'. The track is a beautifully empowering exploration of womanhood and individuality, fighting back against societal expectations of how women should look and act. Alongside carrying an important message, 'Beautiful & Naive' is musically exceptional, combining breathtaking vocals with the silkiest of backings.
Miranda Faul is back with the stunning track 'Holding Me Back', her first single since the release of her debut EP 'Rise & Run'. This new song builds upon the spellbinding EP as Miranda further develops her genre-blending brand of ethereal musicality. 'Holding Me Back' tells a story of a suffocating love that becomes damaging, being based on a poem that Miranda penned a few years ago. The track is a dreamy delve into the musical mind of Miranda Faul, who continues to grow with every release.
'Flashbacks' is the sensational composed new single from Millie Maxwell, which tells the story of falling for someone in your hometown just as you're having to move away. The song's theme sounds comparable to that of a romcom movie, and the emotion the track conveys isn't far off thus either. Delicately crafted verses are paired with choruses that burst with emotion to create a real sonic journey. I am rather ashamed to admit this song was my first experience of Millie Maxwell's music, as having since checked out her full discography it became clear I had no idea what I'd been missing out on.
The next song in this week's feature is one I have been eagerly anticipating for several weeks after hearing it live as an acoustic solo song, but still managed to be blown away by the full-band version. With 'Lights Out' Oli Bruce has created a stellar track that flawlessly showcases his breathtaking vocal range, whilst maintaining that rhythmic indie-rock feel. The song's soundscape feels a further step into a more rounded direction for Oli, who continues to improve with every release.
We finish this week's feature with the truly spectacular debut release 'Away' from dream-pop duo Snowdeer. This song flawlessly balances moments of ethereal delicacy with rampant rawness to create a shoegaze-style track that firmly puts Snowdeer on the map. This song would be an impressive release for most bands at any time, so to launch a career with this as your debut single is testament to the potential this duo possesses.
