This week's Songs of the Week start off with the gritty new single 'Thorn' by one of the UK's most exciting new bands, Keo. The four-piece had already gained themselves a committed following before releasing their debut single 'I Lied, Amber', but the follow-up single 'Thorn' has all the makings of a song that will skyrocket them to the very top of the industry. With their debut EP 'Siren' set for release on June 19th, and an upcoming sold-out tour coming in October, there really is no reason why Keo won't be ending the year as one of the big players in the UK's alt-rock scene.
Another exciting new band who are being driven by a hugely commited fanbase is The Ariston. The London-based indie rockers have got better with each release, epitomised by the brilliance of their fourth single 'I Hate it When You're High'. The new single carefully tackles the struggles of witnessing someone you care about battling addiction, as well as the effect it has on those around them. The lyrical work is profound, but the instrumentals keep a driven indie sound that creates the perfect contrast for such a song.
Liquid D&B artist Emily Jade has been teasing her upcoming EP Liquid Love for a few months now, making it one of the most highly anticipated releases in the upcoming electronic scene. However, despite the excitement around the EP, there had been no singles released. That was until Emily released the huge lead single 'POV' last week. This high-velocity track blends Emily Jade's powerful vocals amongst hard-hitting beats to create a truly special track. If this is a sign of what to expect from the rest of 'Liquid Love', then this could well be one of the EPs of the year.
Iona Summer is back with her third appearance on my Songs of the Week this year, this time with the title track of her brand-new EP 'Maryhill'. Iona's EP is a masterclass in songwriting, showcasing some truly raw, authentic storytelling in the most engaging of ways, and despite how brilliant the other six songs are, nothing epitomises this quite like the EP's title track. Iona Summer is a powerful vocalist with the ability to create truly emotional songs, and this debut EP really feels like the launch of a very special career.
Last week really was the week for EPs, as indie-americana artist PIEN also dropped her sensational debut EP, 'According to Plan'. This project is the first under PIEN's new direction, immersing herself deeper into the americana space, and her already inceredible music is even better for it. All five tracks on the EP are extremely special releases in their own right, but the title track really feels like an introspective lyrical exploration into PIEN as both an artist and a person, which makes for a truly poignant listen.
Long-term SBTM favourite Gabby Rivers returned last week with her first single for over a year, 'Lipstick Karma'. The firey new release sees Gabby call upon her grungiest sound to date to tell the story of a toxic ex who had to deal with karma quickly after the breakup. The song is incredible in its own right, but also ushers in a new era and a new authentic sound for Gabby Rivers, who has all the makings of a star.
Arguably the most emotion song on this week's list is Mina My's stirring new track 'I won't say it (I love you)'. Starting off as a slow ballad, this song builds into the most gripping crescendos of rock-infused brilliance, highlighting the versatility Mina My possess as a solo artist. This versatility makes the teasing of Mina's debut EP 'The Mall Experiment' even more exciting, as it looks set to be one of the most brillianty genre-expanisve bodies of music to be released this year.
Alt-rock stalwarts Pile have just released their immense new single 'Born At Night', which has been taken from their upcoming ninth record 'Sunshine and Balance Beams', arriving August 15th. For a band with such longevity, it is beyond impressive how Pile are still able to develop their sound and release some of the freshest-sounding music, not just on the alt-rock scene, but in music as a whole. The song, which tackles a potential absence of salvation in life, is a blistering introduction to this new era of Pile.
Continuing the earlier trend of new EPs, sensational singer-songwriter Tallulah Guard also released their debut EP 'How Can You Hold Me?' last week. The four-track project explores the full range of human emotions, delving equally into the darkness of mental health struggles and self-sabotage, as much as it does in the light of hope and overcoming adversity. 'Army Of One (Of Many)' perfectly embodies the full emotional depth that this EP possesses, but I urge you to check out Tallulah's full EP as they have created some truly striking songs.
After starting the year off with a dance-inspired collaboration with Amos & Riot Night, Lucy Starr has now released her first full solo release of the year, 'Wrapped Around My Little Finger'. This song sees Lucy return to her guitar-driven routes, creating a textured track that blends indie-rock with a slight americana tone. The lyrics are as catchy as they come, whilst still maintaining an authentic emotional depth, which is testament to the songwriting abilities of Lucy.
Multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Bonniesongs released her hazy new single 'Olive Oil', her second new release of the year, and arguably one of the best to date. The track, which Bonniesongs describes as 'ethereal-grunge' captures a real shoegaze soundscape too, and offers an exciting preview of what to expect in Bonniesongs already highly anticipated sophomore album 'Strangest Feeling', which is set for release on July 25th.
This week's Songs of the Week are rounded out by the infectious new collaboration between alt-pop trio Thundermoon and sensational vocalist Megan Black, 'You. Me.'. The song is fuelled by a high-energy synth-backed sound that celebrates queer love in the most outwardly positive way. It is the first new music from both artists this year, and with pride month and summer both around the corner, there could not have been a more perfect time to release it.
