Songs of the Week - 07/07/2025

These are the 8 tracks you need to check out this week!

Lois Levin - 'Pass You By'

This week's Songs of the Week are kicked off by Lois Levin's sensational new track 'Pass You By', taken from her brand new EP 'Motions'. Truthfully, I could have put every single track from 'Motions' into this week's SOTW as it is one of the best EPs I have heard in some time, blending aspects of jazz and soul into a really distinct and modernised sound. 'Pass You By' gets the pick for this week's list however due to the emotion it carries. The song is a beautifully written tribute to Lois' mother, but serves as a really relatable bit of songwriting for anyone who has lost someone close to them.

Lily Knott - 'right on the money'

Soft-pop artist Lily Knott's stock in the upcoming music scene has been fast rising over the past few years, but has reached whole new heights this year, with the release of three truly sensational singles. The most recent of these, 'right on the money', dropped last week, and it may well be Lily's best song to date. Taking a slightly darker tone than many of her other releases, this song sees Lily delve into her experiences around overthinking and intrusive thoughts. It’s not just an inspiringly open piece of music, it’s also written in a deeply moving way that resonates with many of my own thoughts, and I’m sure with those of many others as well.

Case Oats - 'In a Bungalow'

Chicago-based outfit Case Oats dropped their brilliant new indie-folk single 'In a Bungalow' late last month, the most recent track to be taken from their highly anticipated debut album 'Last Missouri Exit' which is set for release on August 22nd. The song is another stellar example of lead vocalist and guitarist Casey Gomez Walker’s songwriting prowess, as she perfectly captures the feeling of wanting to break free from your childhood home while also being pulled back by a lingering sense of homesickness. It serves as a powerful parallel to the emotional tug-of-war that defines the transition from childhood to the cusp of adulthood.

Ellie Byers - 'Deluded'

Pop-artist Ellie Byers has just dropped her first single of 2025, 'Deluded', which perfectly captures the inner turmoil and eventual feelings of unfair self-blame that can come with leaving a toxic partner. If you have been told you're crazy by a partner, or that things are your fault, when in reality your gut feeling about them was right all along, this is the perfect song for you. Ellie captures this situation with such vivid imagery and a real sense of introspectiveness, all delivered through some genuinely incredible vocalwork.

Nat Dempsey - 'Junk Food'

After releasing the brilliant 'Not Quite There Yet' back in March, Nat Dempsey has returned with an even more anthemic track, 'Junk Food', a guitar-pop-driven indie track that perfectly captures the emotional turmoil of young adulthood. For a song fuelled by self-doubt, heavy expectations and a desire to re-invent oneself, this is an extremely catchy song, and one that establishes Nat as one of the most exciting new artists on the indie scene.

Theo Williams - 'BLONDE BEAST'

Producer/artist Theo Williams dropped his powerful debut EP 'ITALO DISCO DEMOLITION' at the end of June, a conceptual body of music that follows a journey of "demolishing pain with grace". The EP features a number of Theo's boldest-sounding tracks to date, calling upon his rawest thoughts and emotions to create a truly special piece of work. Because of this, highlighting just one song becomes difficult, but the captivating brilliance of 'BLONDE BEAST' with its resonant lyricism is my pick of the bunch.

Flair - 'City Lights'

Scottish five-piece Flair unveiled their anthemic new single 'City Lights' last week, their first release since their self-titled EP dropped at the end of last year. 'City Lights' feels like the perfect soundtrack to the blissful chaos that can happen late at night, and the lost memories that can come with them. The track takes on a slightly more vivid direction than some of Flair's darker earlier music, but still maintains the signature alt-rock brilliance that has seen them become so highly regarded so quickly.

Trout - 'bone'

This week's Songs of the Week are rounded out by 'bone', the hazy new single from Trout, which also acts as the first single from upcoming EP 'Bait' which is set for release on September 5th. Thematically the song sees Trout navigate the need for change following feeling of regret and being stuck in life. The song embraces a chaotic yet impressively balanced soundscape, blending Trout’s textured vocals with a heavy bassline and dreamy, distorted guitars to deliver a thrilling introduction to this new era.
