This week's Songs of the Week are kicked off by the brand-new single 'More!' from one of the best alt-pop artists around Nxdia. The track is an infectious queer love anthem which perfectly sums up that feeling of the almost obsessive euphoria you feel when finding new love. This new release continues a truly meteoric past year for Nxdia who is deservedly taking their place at the very forefront of the alt-music scene, and will undoubtedly be staying there for years to come.
Mira Taylor has been one of the great breakout artists to have emerged over the last few years, but with her new release 'Tough Case' it feels difficult to describe Mira as "emerging" - she is the real deal. The depths of her songwriting prowess becomes increasingly clear with every release, creating well-balanced relatable songs that have you hooked on first listen. The future is here now, and the future is Mira Taylor.
The theme of exceptional singer-songwriters continues. This time it is Madeleine McPherson with her stunning new single 'The Rain'. The new track is one for the dreamers in life, detailing the feelings of plotting a whole love story to share with someone in your head. This atmospheric song sounds absolutely breathtaking on record, but feels tailor-made to have a room of people screaming the lyrics back to Madeleline on stage.
Being production powerhouses and sensational solo artists wasn't quite enough for the team at Sundown Studios, as they have now launched their first release as a duo under the SUNDOWN name, 'Free Falling'. The duo of Glowe and Archr have combined to make a truly memerable track that blends ethereal vocals with a truly mesmerising soundscape. The single is only available on the Sundown Studios website, but I cannot recommend enough you head to the link below and purchase it, as you will struggle to find a more perfect track to enjoy on these hot days.
(This is not an advert, I truly love this song and believe in SUNDOWN's project, and you should all check it out)
'bloom (when the rain falls)' is the emotional new track from Isaac Stuart, a bittersweet journey into feelings of existentialism and finding meaning in life. You can hear from the first line just how important this track is to Isaac, and the authenticity he delivers it in means it will become deeply important to so many others too. This is Isaacs first release of the year, but with a release this special, and the tease of even more music to come, this could end up being a very special year for Isaac Stuart.
Cambridgeshire trio LAY / BYE continue their rapid ascent to the top of the indie/pop-rock music scene with energetic new release 'Not A Clue'. The track takes a slightly heavier approach than LAY / BYE's, showcasing a high-octane guitar-driven sound that will undoubtedly see them fill the biggest of rooms. With every new release, LAY / BYE prove further that they are the real deal, honing in on a signature sound that will see them rise to the very top.
Alt/Modern Rock band Broken Hertz have dropped their first new single of 2025, 'Anastasia', a sultry track that is as catchy as it is captivating. Sounding reminiscent of early 2000's indie, the song follows titular character Anastasia on a journey of nights out in West London. It is rare that a song can paint such a clear mental image of the world it is taking place within, and that is a full testament to the lyricism and stylings of Broken Hertz.
Sara Baroni has been releasing some of the best soft-pop music over the last couple of years, a feat made even more impressive by the fact she is only seventeen, with new track 'Where did he go?' being no different. The introspective track emerges listeners into a relatable world of catching feelings for someone but not quite being ready to admit them to yourself yet. Sara possess artistic ability well beyond her years and will no doubt play a huge role in the pops scene for years to come.
Since returning to the music scene as SAYITAGAIN last autumn, Matt East and Callum Irons have grown from strength to strength, and 'wide open' more than continues this trend. This new single is a sonically joyous track that blends the lines between pop-rock and pop-punk, summing up the feelings of knowing someone is wrong for you but not being ready to leave them yet. This looks set to be a massive year for SAYITAGAIN, who will be household names in no time if they continue with releases this good.
Genre-blending four-piece Dead Rat Society released their riotous new album 'Reflecting Light and Causing Chaos' last week, combining influences from the world of alt-dance, punk, and hip-hop, to create a truly special 10-track journey. Picking just one track to feature proves a difficult task, but lead single 'The Night' immediately sets the tone for a high-veloicty exploration through musical excellence.
Continuing the trend of new albums, the end of April saw Luke O'Hanlon release his poignant new folk album, 'The River Only Flows One Way'. The album itself is full of a number of gems, but for me 'Einstein's Twin' is the pick of the bunch, blending some brilliant lyricism with a gripping backing track that provides the perfect feel for early summer musical listening. If you enjoy what you hear then definitely check out the full EP.
My Songs of the Week this week are rounded up by the sensational singer-songwriter upcomer Olivia Rose and her new track 'Bored Games', taken from her exceptional new EP 'Life Right Now'. The folk-inspired track is a truly perfect introduction to Olivia's music, who feels perfectly positioned to have the most incredible career. She possesses a truly profound songwriting ability, and with the backing of musical geniuses like PET NEEDS, there is absolutely nothing stopping Olivia Rose from becoming folk-rock's next big star.
