Fairytale of New York

New Theatre, Peterborough - 01/11/23
Review by Daniel Marshall

After a huge sell out debut tour and a successful run in the West End, Fairytale of New York returns for its winter UK tour. This year’s tour is so big that the production has arranged two casts to allow simultaneous performances in different cities, and we were lucky enough to attend Cast 2’s opening night at Peterborough’s New Theatre. Both casts contain top tier singers, musicians and dancers to create the ultimate celebration of Irish music whilst spreading the Christmas spirit to all those in attendance. The show is the brainchild of the brilliant Ged Graham, the creator and producer of the critically acclaimed Seven Drunken Nights: The Story of the Dubliners, with Fairytale of New York receiving equally high praise, and deservedly so.

Fairytale of New York showcases the rich culture of Irish music, featuring hits of The Pogues, The Dubliners and a host of traditional Irish songs, combining them with a host of Christmas songs to create a magical Irish-inspired festive party. The tight-knit cast is made up of multi-talented musicians and dancers, with the show being structured in such a way that every cast member had their moment in the spotlight.

As the show began Edward Hole welcomed us, immediately transporting the crowd to a marvellous world the other side of the Irish Sea. Hole delivered one of the standout performances on the night, with his radiant energy and musical prowess shining in every number he was a part of. The extremely talented guitarist trio was completed by Jacob Leeson and Tomas Wolstenholme, both of whom had their own moments in the spotlight to showcase their top tier vocals too. There were some slight sound issues to begin with, but both men carried through like complete professionals, further showcasing just how accomplished they are as musicians.

Ebba Haastrup completed the instrumental line-up with her mind-blowing fiddle playing, creating the Irish backbone to many of the night’s numbers. If Ebba’s fiddle playing somehow wasn’t enough to take you back, then there is no doubt her stunning vocal performances would have been.

Incredible vocal performances was a common theme throughout the night, with the most memorable of all coming from Natalie Crowther’s beautiful rendition of ‘O Holy Night’. As soon as her performance began I was hit with goosebumps, formed in awe of the vocal masterpiece that was unwinding in front of me, with the crowd showing the deserved appreciation when the song finished.

The vocal section was completed by the addition of Leanne Kyte a few songs into the show. Leanne was another standout performer on the night and could lay a fair claim to being one of the most important members of the production. Not only is Leanne Kyte a world class vocalist, but she is also a choreography maestro, choreographing all of the night’s dance performances as well as being the dance captain. She really is a jack of all trades and yet somehow seemingly a master of all.

The Irish-themed music of this production alone would have been enough entertainment, but a spectacular ensemble of dancers, delivering Leanne Kyte’s choreography, managed to bring even more life into the night. The ensemble consisted of Emily Pettite, Florence Beaumont, Katie Butler, Kerry Way and Fiona Kennedy, all of whom provided the perfect visualisation of so many songs whilst also providing percussion in the form of Irish dancing. Despite the performance being around two hours long, the dancing did not get stale as the troupe refuse to stick to one style, incorporating ballet, tap and hip hop into performances.

Overall, Fairytale of New York is a feel-good show that could make even the coldest of hearts feel festive and walk out of the theatre post-show with the biggest smile on their face.
