After debuting nearly 20 years ago, Shelton Epps' jazz take on William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night has returned to the UK. Following a tour that began last September, Talawa Theatre Company's production has now arrived at the Lyric Hammersmith. Set in 1940s Harlem, the story follows young songwriter Viola, who discovers that the only way to get noticed is to disguise herself as a man.
Play On! is a musical that fully embraces the catalogue of the legendary Duke Ellington, with the music at the heart of the production. Cheryl L. West's book moves at a lively pace, allowing the musical numbers to shine while keeping the story clear and engaging. The plot is a faithful retelling of Twelfth Night, keeping key characters and ideas intact, yet avoiding unnecessary complication, making it accessible even for those less familiar with Shakespeare. The result is an energetic night full of music, comedy, and romance.
Michael Buffong's direction reflects his deep passion for the work. Johanna Town's gorgeous lighting and a simple yet effective set by ULTZ combine with the cast to create a cohesive and thoroughly enjoyable experience. Adding to the jazz club atmosphere is a five-piece onstage band, who bring Ellington’s music to life. Each musician gets their own moments to shine, while the ensemble sound remains impeccable throughout.

The cast leave the biggest impression. From the opening moments, the sheer talent on stage is apparent. Kenrick H2O Sandy's choreography fuses classic jazz with modern styles, sustaining energy throughout the show. Tsemaye Bob-Egbe is a delight as Viola/Vyman, navigating the character's unusual situation while delivering strong vocals. Standout performances from Llewellyn Jamal and Lifford Shillingford on Rocks in My Bed, Cameron Bernard Jones in a brilliant spotlight number, and the powerhouse vocals of KoKo Alexandra and Earl Gregory had the audience captivated, earning riotous applause.
Play On! is a celebration of performing arts. Music, dance, and performance are fused with such passion that it’s impossible not to be swept up in the experience. Audience joy was palpable, with many dancing along as the music played. Whether you’re seeking a fun night out or a fresh take on a classic story, this is a show not to be missed.
