The Empire Strips Back

Stepping into Riverside Studios I really had no idea what I was getting myself in for. I mean, Star Wars? And burlesque? It sounds like an idea that would be nothing more than a wild title, and yet the team behind The Empire Strips Back have created a Jedi masterpiece.

This production brings the worlds of Star Wars and burlesque together without letting either part down. While it is a genuine tribute to the series that fans love, the parody elements never feel like a compromise. You might expect low-effort costumes and vague references, but the quality and care put into the design were impressive, while still maintaining the raunchiness of burlesque. It is quite a sight to see a mesmerising performance by a talented dancer wearing a screen-accurate Boba Fett helmet. This level of skill and attention to detail was maintained throughout the night, with some phenomenal appearances from unexpected characters.

Hosting the evening was comedian Pete Dobbing, first as “Major Pete” and then as a member of the Rebel Alliance. His work as MC tied the night together, keeping energy high while ensuring the audience had a great time and respecting both the cast and crew.
