Step Behind The Stage
The Elvis Years
New Theatre, Peterborough - 07/11/25
Review by Daniel Marshall

With over 20 years of touring under its belt, The Elvis Years has firmly established itself as a must-see for lovers of the King of Rock and Roll. Fronted by Mario Kombou, the original lead of the West End’s Jailhouse Rock, this production offers a chronological retelling of Elvis Presley’s life through mesmerising performances, seamless costume changes, and a large screen playing era-defining footage that ties each chapter together. The show features over 50 timeless hits, from early rockabilly classics to the soaring anthems of his Vegas years, celebrating every stage of a truly extraordinary career.
The journey begins in July 1954 with Elvis’ debut recording of That’s All Right at Sun Records, before moving through the pivotal moments that defined his life and music—from the army years and Hollywood stardom to global superstardom and his unforgettable Las Vegas residency at The International Hotel. Each section flows naturally into the next, giving audiences a real sense of witnessing Elvis’ evolution right before their eyes.

For a production with such an extensive setlist, the musical standard remains impressively consistent, creating several standout moments of emotional power and sheer entertainment. A heartfelt rendition of Love Me Tender, performed in tribute to Elvis’ mother Gladys, brought genuine poignancy, while lively performances of Didja’ Ever and The Wonder of You injected playful energy as Mario danced through the stalls, shaking hands and sharing smiles with audience members. The breathtaking finale of An American Trilogy stole the show, delivered with stunning vocal power and emotional depth, perfectly encapsulating the spirit of Elvis’ legacy.
Mario Kombou’s portrayal of Elvis is captivating. He captures not only the voice and mannerisms that defined Presley but also his charm, wit, and warmth, often breaking into ad-libbed moments that let his own personality shine through. He is joined on stage by an ‘all-star band’ who breathe new life into songs adored for decades. Together, they create a night that is both a celebration of Elvis’ music and a heartfelt tribute to the timeless impact he continues to have on audiences worldwide.
The Elvis Years is far more than a tribute show; it is a full-scale celebration of a cultural icon, leaving the audience with smiles, nostalgia, and a renewed appreciation for the King of Rock and Roll.
