To celebrate the release of 'Language Barrier', I am joined by Catlea to discover more about their album, before discovering the songs that shaped them through my 'Songs Behind' feature
After years of pouring your emotions into stellar songs, how does it feel knowing you finally have a full album out?
"Well first of all thank you! Honestly I can’t say enough how excited and happy I am to finally have an album to share. It feels a bit surreal, but in the best possible way."
Much of your music sounds so upbeat on first listen, but often tackles some really deep and introspective topics. How important is creating the contrast between the two aspects to you?
"That dichotomy is deeply important to me. I tend to write from not only the way that I feel, but also the way I express those feelings in my daily life. The meaning behind the contrast varies depending on the song, but each one comes from a very real place for me."
How excited are you to play these songs live? Is the live performance of the song something you consider whilst crafting them?
"I am very excited! And yes, my team and I have spent a long time specifically shaping each song so they work whether you listen to them live or recorded."
Favourite Song to Play Live:
'Bones - Catlea'
"I have a few that I really love to play, but my favourite right now is 'Bones'. It’s the freshest of the songs, since it was the last we recorded for the album, and it’s honestly just really fun to sing."
Song That Reminds You of Your Childhood:
'Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd'
"Can I digress for a second? It’s related, I promise. When I was a kid, my dad would make playlists for me to catch me up on all the music I missed while I was busy not being alive yet. One of the songs that was on basically every playlist he made was Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd. That also happened to be the first song I learned how to play on guitar, because my brother - who taught me - is an amazing guitarist and he wanted to teach me how to play. I was maybe 8 when he taught me how to play the intro on my quarter-sized Taylor. That song will always remind me of growing up, and it’ll always be one of my favourite songs."
First Album You Brought:
'Vulnerable (Deluxe) - The Used'
"I actually don’t remember the first album I bought all on my own, but I do remember the first album I was really excited about. It was Vulnerable (Deluxe Version, of course) by The Used. I played it in the car on my way to school with my mother and she absolutely hated it, but she let me listen to it because it made me happy. I know that seems out of character if you listen to my music, but I would be lying if I said they weren’t still one of my favourite bands to this day."
Song That Made You Want to Be a Musician:
'Clocks - Coldplay'
"Ooh! That’s a tough one. That’s like asking what dish made someone want to become a chef, or what flight someone went on that made them want to become a pilot. But if I had to answer, I’d say it would probably be Clocks by Coldplay. The piano, the harmonies, everything about it just spoke to me; not to be cliché, hah!"
Song That Gets You Through Hard Times:
'Black Sheep - Kailee Morgue'
"Another tough one! It depends on the hard time, if I’m honest. Lately I’d say it’s a cover of Black Sheep from Scott Pilgrim vs The World by Kailee Morgue. Kailee and I have pretty similar voices, so it’s easy for me to picture myself in her shoes when she sings. "
A Song You Would Have Loved to Write:
'God is a woman - Ariana Grande'
"This is going to seem like such a basic answer, but “God is a woman” by Ariana Grande. The harmonies in that song and the uniqueness of the subject matter just hit so hard no matter how many times I listen."
Song You'd Put On at a Party:
'Tears of Gold - Faouzia'
"It’s such an underrated and iconic song, and her vocals are truly unmatched in my opinion."
Favourite Song of all Time:
'Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd'
"To go back to what I said earlier: Wish You Were Here, Pink Floyd. Beyond the personal history I have with the song, the production, guitar, and lyrics have had a profound effect on how I write. A close second is “Hospital for Souls” by Bring Me The Horizon, though."
Song You are Most Proud Of:
'Bones - Catlea' & 'Crumbling - Catlea' (Plus more coming soon!!)
"If we’re talking about the songs I’ve released or recorded, then I would have to say Bones or Crumbling. I feel like I really discovered my sound with those ones. But to be candid, my favorites are the ones I haven’t even recorded yet! I’ve started to experiment with different topics and sounds and I’m very excited to see how they evolve by the time they find their way onto my next project. "
