"‘All This Time' is a true love song. I wrote it while reflecting on a period when I had been sitting on my feelings for someone without saying anything, scared but also so sure at the same time. I wanted to capture that moment right before you finally let someone in, because I think that’s the most special part. I started the song a few years ago but never finished it. It came back to mind last year, and I ended up finishing it spontaneously in one session"

HAFFWAY - 'Wind Up'
"‘Wind Up’ is, not to much surprise, not a happy song. I tried to encapsulate what it felt like in the days leading up to being admitted to the psychiatric hospital. It feels chaotic at times, somber at others and at one point rather triumphant. The process of coming to terms with my inner humanity and getting to know the other me in me has been nothing short of turbulent. I assume it's not too singular of an experience."

"‘Is Love Real?’ is one of the first songs I ever wrote about losing hope in love, when you feel at your loneliest. It’s a song that I’ve played at empty open mic nights and at sold out headline shows, and I felt it was so important to include on ‘A Modern Girl’ deluxe because it’s been with me since the beginning of my career."

Nicole Atkins & Chris Isaak - 'Cue the Symphony'
"While sitting on Chris Isaak’s porch during a rain storm this song came out of a conversation we were having. A mundane sentence had a certain sparkle and morphed into a ballad of everlasting love. It only took about 10 minutes until we were swept into the drama of it and the full cinematic scope of ‘Cue the Symphony’ came into being. I’ve been singing with Chris Isaak for almost 20 years and this song is the first time we’ve committed our voices to tape together.”

But I also write about the pressure to make the right choices, which I think many people my age can relate to."
